Jeong Chang-son Burial Ground Stone Furnishings
정창손묘역석물 · 鄭昌孫墓域石物

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the burial ground of Jeong Chang-son (鄭昌孫, 1420–1487), a civil official who served under King Sejo and King Seongjong of Joseon. In 1455, the first year of King Sejo, he was honoured as a Jwaik Merit Subject, one of those recognised for aiding King Sejo's accession to the throne. The mound is a single mound in which he is buried together with his wife of the Cheongju Jeong clan, and the kerbstones around it are modern additions. To the front right of the mound stand two tomb markers (myopyo): one for Jeong Chang-son and one for his wife of the Cheongju Jeong clan. The tomb marker of the Cheongju Jeong clan is in the hayeopsubangbu form, a stele with a capstone decorated with an inverted lotus leaf set on a square base, with deeply and clearly carved lotus-leaf motifs representative of the late fifteenth century. Jeong Chang-son's own tomb marker is in the wonsubangbu form, a stele with a round capstone on a square base, a shape typical of the early sixteenth century. There are two pairs of civil official stone figures in total, all in the bokdugongbok form, wearing a bokdu cap and official robes (gongbok). Each has a simple, column-like body carved in a flat, planar manner. At the entrance to the burial ground stands a spirit path stele (sindobi). The original stele, with an inscription composed by Seo Geo-jeong, was damaged in 1504 and later re-erected in 1623. The new inscription was composed by Han Jun-gyeom, who added to Seo Geo-jeong's original text, and was written out by Sim Yeol. The stone lantern, stone sheep and other furnishings seen today were added in modern times. This burial ground is linked to several significant historical events, including the Six Martyred Ministers, the restoration of King Danjong, and the Gapja Literati Purge. It vividly illustrates how the stone furnishings of a tomb could be dismantled and the burial itself reorganised as a result of political upheaval, and then re-erected afterwards — a history that gives it great value as cultural heritage.
