Yeongmojae is the ancestral memorial hall (jaesil) of Yu Eun, a Buhogun (deputy commander of the guards) who was the founding ancestor of the Gigye Yu clan's settlement in the Boeun area. It is presumed to have first been built sometime between 1690, the year of Yu Eun's death, and 1771, when the printing woodblocks of the Gwangguk Jigyeongnok (a Tangible Cultural Heritage item) were made. Apart from repairs to the roof, rafters and part of the timber flooring, the wooden structure survives relatively well in the form it had when first built. This building is a clan-related site of the Boeun area, associated with a range of relics and remains including a tomb, a storage hall (bosil) and the Gwangguk Jigyeongnok printing woodblocks, and it offers a meaningful glimpse into the process by which this local clan put down roots in the area. Although some parts have been altered later, the interior structure retains relatively well the old style of the Joseon period and clearly shows the character of a jaesil of this region. At the same time, the Gwangguk Jigyeongnok woodblocks, once kept in the ceiling of the main hall (daecheongmaru), deepen the historical significance of this building.
