Gangneung Jo Cheol-hyeon House
강릉조철현가옥 · 江陵曺喆鉉家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe current owner's grandfather first built this house after moving to the area, but it was destroyed by bombing during the Korean War. It was rebuilt in 1953 by Jo Gyu-pal and has remained in its present form since. The house has a U-shaped plan with no separate gate quarters, and consists of a main house (anchae) and a men's quarters (sarangchae). The rear of the storehouse and the narrow wooden porch (toenmaru) of the sarangchae are exposed to the outside. The anchae measures three kan (structural bays) across the front and two kan along the side, and is divided into a kitchen, a side room and the main room. The main room originally had a sliding door across its middle and a toenmaru running along its side, but both were removed to enlarge the room into a single space. The sarangchae consists of a servants' quarters, a small sarang room and a large sarang room, with a toenmaru placed in front of the sarang room for ease of use. Both the sarangchae and the anchae are finished with hip-and-gable roofs (paljakjibung), so named because their side roofline forms the shape of the Chinese character 八, meaning 'eight'.
