This stele was erected by order of Yeonsangun, the tenth king of Joseon. A geumpyobi (prohibition stele) was originally a stele erected by the royal court to mark off areas closed to the public for purposes such as hunting and military training, so as to inform the people of the restriction. Yeonsangun, however, in the course of his tyrannical rule, turned such prohibited areas into sites of entertainment and pleasure. The stele was unearthed around 1984 while the tomb of Yi Byeon, Lord Geumcheon, in Daeja-dong, Goyang, was being restored, but it was not introduced to the relevant academic community until 1994. The stele body (the part bearing the inscription) and the roof stone are made of granite. The roof stone is almost entirely damaged, though traces of a lotus-leaf pattern can still be made out in places. The base stone was damaged and has recently been replaced with new stone. Carved in the centre of the front of the stele body is the inscription: 'Anyone who trespasses inside the prohibited zone will be deemed to have defied the king's command and will be punished.'
