Namwonsa Temple is said to have been founded in 831, the sixth year of King Heungdeok of Unified Silla, by the National Preceptor Jingam. It was originally a large temple complex of dozens of buildings called Beopdangsa, but it fell into ruin over time. The temple grounds today contain the Mireukjeon Hall, a bell pavilion, and monks' quarters. The Mireukjeon Hall measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. In front of the hall stands a five-storey stone pagoda, but it is so badly damaged that it has lost its original form.
