Goseongeupseong Walled Town
고성읍성 · 固城邑城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Goseong fortress site, traditionally said to have been the site of the royal palace of King Mallo of Gaya, survives today in hardly any form, though parts of Goseongeupseong and the site of the Goseong Japanese-style fortress remain. According to the Dongguk yeoji seungnam, Goseongeupseong had a circumference of 3,524 cheok and a height of 15 cheok, with fourteen wells and one pond, but most of its walls have since been destroyed. The Goseong Japanese fortress was one of several fortresses built by Japanese forces at strategic points along the south coast during the Jeongyu War of 1597 in order to garrison the area, and almost nothing of it survives today. Its overall structure and scale are difficult to determine, but it is thought to be related to the Songhak-dong Tombs (Historic Site No. 119), the shell mound at Oe-ri, Goseong, and the earthen rampart of Mannyeonsa Temple, suggesting that a fortress is likely to have stood on this site as early as the Gaya period.
