Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHajang-ri originally belonged to Tanbu-myeon, Boeun-gun, and lay below Ginmae (Jangsan), so it was called Arae-jinmi or Hajangsan; with the reorganisation of administrative districts in 1914 it was renamed Hajang-ri. The Gyeongju Yi Clan Hyoyeolgak Pavilion is a commemorative gate built to honour the filial piety of three brothers of the Gyeongju Yi clan, Yi Chang-gyeong, Yi Won-gyeong and Yi Myeong-gyeong, and the exemplary virtue of two women of the clan, one of the Yeonan Kim clan and one of the Changnyeong Seong clan. The pavilion stands in an isolated spot away from Hajang-ri village, surrounded by reorganised paddy fields, with a recently built gateball court in front. The building has a frontage of six bays and a depth of one bay, with double eaves and a matbae (gabled) roof fitted with wind boards on the sides. It is built on a cement platform: square granite plinths below and octagonal granite plinths above support round columns. The bracket system is of the cho-ikgong type, and the frame is of the three-purlin type. The walls are of cement, reaching up to the plinths at the front and up to the upper lintels on the sides and rear. Inside the building hang plaques, reading from west to east: 'Gate of the filial son Yi Chang-gyeong, posthumously granted the rank of Seunghullang and the post of Jwarang, Board of Taxation'; 'Gate of the filial son Yi Won-gyeong, of the rank Jungjik-daebu, Magistrate of Okgwa County and Military Commander of Namwon Garrison'; and 'Gate of the filial son Yi Myeong-gyeong, posthumously granted the rank of Seunghullang and the post of Jwarang, Board of Works'.
