Daejosa Temple Stone Pagoda
대조사석탑 · 大鳥寺石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in front of Wontongbojeon Hall at Daejosa Temple. Only part of it had survived, and in 1975 the remaining missing parts were found and the pagoda was re-erected. The pagoda has a two-tier base (gidan) supporting the weight of the whole structure, topped by a three-story body (tapsin); the second- and third-story body stones and the finial at the top were newly made. On each tier of the base, carvings imitating pillar shapes are placed at the corners and at the centre of each face. The roof stones of the body have supports carved into their undersides — three tiers on the first and second stories and two tiers on the third, giving an irregular appearance. The eaves of the roof stones run level at the centre and lift gently upward at the four corners. The ratio by which the stories diminish going upward is comparatively small, giving the pagoda a sense of stability; it is presumed to have been built in the Goryeo period.
