Siho Historic House, Gangneung
강릉 시호 고택 · 江陵 詩湖 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was the home of Park Gye-dong, a renowned scholar of Gangneung. The sarangchae (men's quarters) is about 300 years old, while the anchae (women's quarters) and the storehouse wing are about 150 years old. The building forms a square courtyard layout, divided into the anchae and the sarangchae. The anchae, facing the main gate, has a toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda) along its front that extends to the daecheongmaru (open wooden-floored hall) on the left. The sarangchae has a frontage of four bays, and its roof is a paljak (hipped-and-gabled) roof whose silhouette from the side resembles the character 八, meaning 'eight'. Sliding doors originally stood between the rooms, but when the house was repaired in the 1990s these were replaced with walls, and the built-in closets were removed.
