This is a seowon (Confucian academy) that honours three members of the Pungyang Jo clan: Jo Bak (pen name Seokgok), Jo Gyeon-so (pen name Seonggang) and Jo Seong-bok (pen name Toesujae). Jo Bak (1577–1650) passed the state examination in 1606, the 39th year of King Seonjo, and entered official service. Among the dangsanggwan, the senior-rank officials who formed the highest echelon of government, he held the post of Tongjeongdaebu. Jo Gyeon-so (1611–1677) was a civil official of the late Joseon period whose official career reached the post of Magistrate of Geumgu, but he resigned to devote himself to scholarship and to teaching younger students. Jo Seong-bok (1681–1723) rose to the post of Daesagan (Director of the Office of the Censor-General) but was exiled by his political opponents and died there. The academy was first built in 1757, the 33rd year of King Yeongjo, at Dongsa-ri in Sedo-myeon, where it initially enshrined only the spirit tablet of Jo Seong-bok. It was moved to its present site in 1957, at which point Jo Bak and Jo Gyeon-so also began to be enshrined there.
