This is a Confucian academy built to honour the loyalty and integrity of Jo Sin. Jo Sin served as magistrate of Hoeyang County during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo (r. 1351–1374), and when Sin Don seized political power at the end of Goryeo, he withdrew from politics and lived in seclusion. He is also known as having been a childhood tutor to Yi Bang-won, and he trained scholars such as Park Paeng-nyeon and Yu Seong-won. Donggokseowon was built by local Confucian scholars during the reign of King Cheoljong of Joseon (r. 1849–1863), but it was demolished in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing private academies, and was restored in 1930. The buildings are arranged in a square layout, with the outer hall called Jeonhakdang and the inner hall called Hwasuru.
