Seated Gyeongju Angye-ri Stone Shakyamuni Buddha
경주안계리석조석가여래좌상 · 慶州安溪里石造釋迦如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue's head is broken, and the hair is rendered in a spiral pattern. The face is flat and full on both sides; a hole for the baekho (urna, a tuft of white hair between the eyebrows, symbolising wisdom) remains between the eyebrows, and the eyes, nose and mouth are heavily worn. The neck bears the three creases (samdo) traditionally marking a Buddha's virtue, the shoulders are broad and dignified, the chest full, and the waist slender, harmonising well with the large, broad knees. The robe leaves the right shoulder bare; the left hand rests palm-up on the knee, while the right hand hangs down towards the ground. The lower base of the pedestal has two arch-shaped niches on each side, and the upper base is carved with a triple layer of lotus petals. In 1999 a roof tile inscribed with the name "Angyesa Temple" was discovered at this temple site, and following two excavations in 2002 and 2003, the middle stone of the pedestal was restored using new material to reinforce it. Among the stones sorted during the excavations, a rectangular base stone is notable for its carvings: on the front, two figures kneel facing each other; on the back, a three-storey stone pagoda and a bodhisattva image; and on both sides, lions.
