Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress stands in Hangi-ri, Ungyang-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do; its walls form a valley-embracing mountain fortress enclosing the summit together with the valley below. The walls were built of natural stone, measuring about 1,500 m in length and some 2 m in height; the interior is now used as farmland. It is not known exactly when the fortress was first built, but it is said that Baekje built it during the Three Kingdoms period to defend against Silla incursions, and that it was rebuilt during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 to repel Japanese forces. During the second invasion of 1597, it was also the site of a fierce battle between General Yi Il and the forces of Katō Kiyomasa. A legend holds that the fortress was built by a brother and sister; because the younger sister is said to have carried stones in the folds of her skirt, it is also known as "Yeoseong" (Women's Fortress) or "Chimaseong" (Skirt Fortress). Scattered around the fortress are piles of stones said to be left over from its construction.
