Cheongilsa is a shrine built in 1621, the thirteenth year of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, to honour the memory of Kim Si-seup (1435–1493) and Kim Hyo-jong (1414–1493). Kim Si-seup was an early Joseon scholar and the author of Geumosinhwa (New Tales from Mt Geumo), Korea's earliest novel written in Classical Chinese. The present Cheongilsa was briefly closed under Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing seowon (private Confucian academies), and was rebuilt in 1970.
