A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally guide local residents. Buan Hyanggyo was first built in 1414, the fourteenth year of King Taejong of Joseon, but was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598. Several of its buildings were subsequently rebuilt one after another, and in 1894, the thirty-first year of King Gojong, the dongjae and seojae, the east and west student quarters, were newly built. The Daeseongjeon itself was rebuilt in 1600, the thirty-third year of King Seonjo. The Daeseongjeon measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a gable roof that forms the shape of the character 人 when seen from the side. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and sages of China. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, servants and books from the state to support its teaching, but today its educational role has ended, leaving only its function of holding memorial rites.
