Seoljaeseowon is a Confucian academy built to honour Seoljae Jeong Ga-sin (1244–1298). Jeong Ga-sin was a civil official of Goryeo who passed the state examination and held a succession of posts, and was also renowned as a literary stylist. The academy was founded in 1688, the fourteenth year of King Sukjong, at Geuman-dong, Noan-myeon, and in 1712, the thirty-eighth year of King Sukjong, it was elevated to a hyangsau, a local shrine for commemorative rites, taking the name Seoljaeseowon. In 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong, it was relocated to Yeongan Village, where the lecture hall Yeongmojae was built. It was later closed in 1868, the fifth year of King Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's decree abolishing seowon, and was rebuilt in 1953. The academy currently enshrines the spirit tablets of nine men: Jeong Sik, who received jeongnyeo recognition for filial piety in 1693, the nineteenth year of King Sukjong; Sin Jang and Jeong Sim, added in 1723, the third year of King Gyeongjong; Jeong Sang, Jeong Yeo-rin and Jeong Ran, added in 1953; and Jeong Cho and Jeong Nul, added in 1988. Within the academy grounds stand the shrine Seoljaesa, the lecture hall Yeongmojae, and an inner gate. Seoljaesa measures three kan across the front and one kan along the side, with a gable roof shaped like the character 人 when seen from the side. Yeongmojae measures four kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the character 八 when seen from the side; a square gate on its side serves in place of an outer gate. Yeongmojae, the lecture hall, is used for the academy's various events and gatherings and for lectures on scholarship.
