Cheongmundang is a house said to have been built by Yu Si-hoe (1562–1635), the sixteenth-generation descendant of the Jinju Yu clan. The family originally lived in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do; after Yu Si-hoe's nephew, Yu Jeok, was chosen as a son-in-law of King Seonjo, and following the death of Yu Jeok's father, King Seonjo ordered that a burial site be chosen here in Ansan, and the family settled here from that time. The clan subsequently received extensive land and rights to fishing and salt production along the Ansan coast from the state, and lived here for generations, producing many notable figures. In the late Joseon period Cheongmundang served as a meeting place for literati who had been excluded from political power, and its library, Mangwollu, literally 'Hall of Ten Thousand Books', one of the four great private libraries of the Joseon dynasty, is said to have provided the scholarly foundation for their circle.
