Sungboksa Temple Site Three-story Stone Pagoda
숭복사지삼층석탑 · 崇福寺址三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are twin pagodas standing east and west at the site of Sungboksa Temple, each consisting of a three-storey body set on a two-tier platform. They are identical in scale and style: pillar shapes are carved on both the lower and upper tiers of the platform, and on the upper tier, in particular, images of the Palbujungsin — the eight guardian deities believed in Buddhism to protect the Dharma and guide the people — are carved on each face between the pillar carvings. Pillar shapes are also carved on the body stones, and door-shaped carvings are placed on all four sides of the first-storey body stone. The roof stones have four-tiered supports on their undersides. At present both pagodas survive with some of their stones damaged or missing. On the east pagoda, part of the platform has been destroyed and the second-storey body stone and the finial are missing; on the west pagoda, part of the platform has likewise been destroyed, and the second- and third-storey body stones, the third-storey roof stone, and the finial are missing. Overall they follow the typical style of Unified Silla stone pagodas, but the reduction of the roof-stone supports to four tiers suggests they were built in the late Unified Silla period.
