A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages, and to educate and morally instruct the local populace. Impihyanggyo was first built in 1403, the third year of King Taejong of Joseon, in Heuksan-ri, and was relocated to its present site in 1710, the thirty-sixth year of King Sukjong. Daeseongjeon Hall measures three kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character for "person" (人) when viewed from the side. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and Korean sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants, books and other support from the state and taught students, but today its educational function has disappeared and only its role in holding memorial rites remains.
