Dongsa-ri Stone Lantern
동사리석등 · 東舍里石燈

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an octagonal stone lantern standing within Nampyeong Elementary School. Centred on the fire chamber where the light was lit, it has a three-tiered base below and is finished above with a roof stone and a finial. On the base, lotus petals are carved around the lower base stone, an octagonal central pillar is set above it, and an upper base stone, likewise decorated with a lotus design, is placed on top; perhaps because of heavy wear, the shape of the petals is barely visible. The fire chamber has four small pillars set at its four corners, allowing light to be lit inside. The roof stone's upper surface is almost flat, with the eight corner lines clearly defined and the eaves forming a gentle curve. At the top sits a finial that is round below and shaped like a flower bud above. Overall it is not an elaborate work but has a simple, unadorned appearance, and it is thought to have been erected during the Goryeo period.
