Gamsansa Temple Site Three-story Stone Pagoda
감산사지삼층석탑 · 甘山寺址三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGamsansa Temple, located on the east side of the road leading from Gyeongju to Ulsan and on the west side of the high ridges of Tohamsan Mountain, was founded in 719, the eighteenth year of King Seongdeok of Silla, by Kim Ji-seong, who held the rank of Jungachan. This pagoda, which had collapsed, was re-erected in 1965 and now stands about 3.3 m high. The platform has two tiers: the lower tier is made up of four stones, with corner pillars and intermediate pillars carved on each face. Corner pillars and intermediate pillars are likewise carved on each face of the upper tier, and the cover stone is made up of two stones. The first-storey body stone and roof stone are each a single stone, and corner pillars are carved on the body stone. Four-tiered supports are carved on the roof stone, and its upper surface forms a sloping drip-edge. At present the second- and third-storey body stones are missing, and only the roof stones remain. At the top, only the square base stone that once supported the finial remains. It well illustrates the typical style of Unified Silla stone pagodas, and with its straight eaves-lines and upturned corners on the roof stones, it conveys a light, buoyant feeling.
