On the summit of Gaksan in Daebang-dong, Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, stands a beacon mound (bonghwadae) — an old means of communication using torch fire and smoke — preserved in its original form, and Gaksansanseong Fortress remains along the western ridge. During the reign of King Wonjong of Goryeo (r. 1259–1274), the fortress and beacon mound were built, and the base of the Guraryang naval garrison was established at Julhang-teo to defend the area. After the garrison was moved to Saryangdo Island at the end of the Goryeo period, the place was left undefended, and Japanese pirates (waegu) invaded and set fire to the fortress. Thereafter Gaksan became the site of a beacon mound alone, its signal fires (bongsu) linked to Daebangsan to the south, Usan beacon mound in Gonyang to the west, and Anjeom beacon mound in Sacheon to the north.
