A hyanggyo (local Confucian school) was an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local population. Gochang Hyanggyo originated when a school hall standing in Wolgok-ri was relocated here during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo (r. 1351–1374), and it was rebuilt in 1512, the seventh year of King Jungjong of Joseon. The Daeseongjeon Hall was repaired in 1605, the 38th year of King Seonjo, and its roof tiles were restored in 1974. It measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a gabled roof that forms the shape of the character 人 when viewed from the side. Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius, his disciples, and Korean sages. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to support the teaching of students, but today its educational function has disappeared, leaving only the function of holding memorial rites. Gochang Hyanggyo holds many books needed for research into the local history of the region.
