Gyeongju Geungyeriip Buddha Statue
경주근계리입불상 · 慶州根溪里立佛像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddha statue, 176 cm in height, enshrined at Yongunsa Temple in Angang-eup, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. On the front of a boat-shaped oval mandorla, a tathagata figure standing upright and facing forward is carved in very high relief; the head and the upper part of the mandorla, now missing, have been repaired with cement. The long face, triangular nose, small mouth and short ears give it a distinctive impression. The body and robes are rendered simply and schematically, and the mandorla behind the Buddha's body bears no pattern at all, giving it a plain appearance. A distinctive feature of this statue is that a three-storey pagoda is carved on the back of the mandorla, on which a seated tathagata figure is depicted.
