Hongcheon Local Confucian School
홍천향교 · 洪川鄕校

A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally guide local people. Hongcheon Local Confucian School is said to have been founded in 1531, the twenty-sixth year of King Jungjong of Joseon, though there is no firm evidence for this; it is said to have changed site several times before being moved to its present location in 1635, the thirteenth year of King Injo. The buildings that survive today comprise five structures — the Daeseongjeon, the Myeongnyundang, the Dongjae, the Seojae and the caretaker's quarters — along with the Seokhoeru gate pavilion and an inner three-bay gate. The present buildings were rebuilt or repaired after being damaged in the Korean War, restoring their former appearance. During the Joseon period the state provided land, slaves and books to support the school's teaching, but its educational function has since disappeared, leaving only the function of holding memorial rites.
