A hyanggyo was a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally guide the people of the region. Hoengseonghyanggyo is said to have been built in the seventh year of King Taejo of Joseon (1398), and to have been relocated and rebuilt several times since. All of its buildings except Daeseongjeon, the main shrine hall, together with its holdings and records, were destroyed during the Korean War. The dormitories Dongjae and Seojae were rebuilt in 1954, and Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, in 1960. The buildings that survive today are Daeseongjeon, Myeongnyundang, Dongmu, Seomu, Dongjae and Seojae. Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and of sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period the state provided land, bonded servants (nobi) and books to support instruction here, but today the school's educational role has ended and only its memorial rites continue.
