Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDojamseowon Confucian Academy was built to honour the scholarship and loyalty of Jo Ho-ik (pen name Jisan, 1545–1609). Jo Ho-ik was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period and a scholar who carried on the teachings of Yi Hwang (Toegye). He distinguished himself during the Imjin War and the Jeongyu War, and after his death he was posthumously given the title of Minister of Personnel. The academy was built in 1612, the fourth year of King Gwanghaegun, and in 1678, the fourth year of King Sukjong, it received a royal signboard reading "Dojam", becoming a royal-chartered academy (sayeok seowon). It was later closed under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, but was restored in 1914 and rebuilt in 1981. The academy grounds include a shrine, a lecture hall, Manghoejeong Pavilion, a memorial stele (sindobi), a stele pavilion, a four-pillared gate, and a kitchen building. Spirit tablets are enshrined in the shrine hall, and memorial rites are held every year in the third and ninth lunar months. Manghoejeong Pavilion was where Jo Ho-ik taught his disciples, while the kitchen building was where ritual food was prepared and the academy's caretaker resided.
