Seonggiseong Fortress, Geochang
거창 성기성 · 居昌 聖基城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeonggiseong Fortress stands in Seonggi-ri, Jusang-myeon, Geochang-gun, South Gyeongsang Province. It is a temoe-type mountain fortress, enclosing the summit of a hill within its walls. Built of natural stones set upon natural bedrock, only about 30 m of the wall survives today. It is said to have been built by righteous army (uibyeong) volunteers during the Japanese invasions of 1592 (Imjin War), although this is not certain. Given that the fortress sits atop a mountain, and that its walls were built using the naetak method - facing the outer side with stone while banking the inner side plainly with earth - it is thought to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period and to have continued in use through to the Joseon period.
