A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and civilise local people. Jeong Seon Local Confucian School originally stood at the foot of Sambongsan Mountain. It was destroyed by a great flood in 1605, the 38th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, rebuilt at several different sites, and finally established at its present location in 1732, the eighth year of King Yeongjo. The Daeseongjeon Hall and the Dongmu and Seomu, the east and west shrine halls, were completed first, followed the next year by the Myeongnyundang Hall, the students' teaching space, and its auxiliary buildings. The Daeseongjeon was refurbished in 1960, and the Myeongnyundang and other buildings were repaired afterwards. In its layout, the Dongmu and Seomu stand on either side in front of the Daeseongjeon. In front of the Daeseongjeon stands the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall, with the Dongjae and Seojae, the students' dormitories, on either side in front of it. The Myeongnyundang measures five bays across the front and two bays deep, while the Dongjae and Seojae each measure three bays across the front and two bays deep. The Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants and books from the state to support its teaching, but today it no longer functions as a school and serves only for the performance of memorial rites.
