Five-story Stone Pagoda in Jinwon-ri, Jangseong
장성 진원리 오층석탑 · 長城 珍原里 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda originally stood at a place called Tapdong, on the hill behind Jinwon-ri. During the Japanese colonial period, Japanese attempted to remove it illegally, but opposition from local residents prevented its removal, so it came to be set up at its present site instead. It consists of a five-storey body set on a single-tier foundation, though the fourth storey and above have been lost. Pillar shapes are carved into the stones of both the foundation and the body. The roof stones have steeply sloping drip surfaces, with eaves that run horizontally before curving upward at the four corners, and the underside of each roof stone has three tiers of supports. Because the parts were not properly fitted together when the pagoda was moved and re-erected, the body is not straight. The whole pagoda is also slender and elongated, lacking a sense of stability, and it is presumed to date from the Goryeo period.
