A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify local residents. The date when Hwacheon Hyanggyo was first built is not known. All of its buildings were destroyed by fire during the Korean War; the Daeseongjeon Hall and the inner gate (a three-doored gate marking the ritual precinct) were rebuilt in 1960. The perimeter wall was built in 1963, and Myeongnyundang Hall was built in 1975. The buildings that survive today are the Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, the inner gate, the outer gate, and a storehouse for ritual vessels. Within the outer gate stands Myeongnyundang Hall, four bays across the front and two bays deep; up a flight of steps, within the inner gate, stands the Daeseongjeon Hall, three bays across the front and two bays deep. The Daeseongjeon Hall enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and of Confucian scholars of China and Korea, and rites are held there. During the Joseon period the state provided land, slaves and books so that students could be taught there, but today the educational function has disappeared and only the ritual function remains.
