Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChilsanseowon Confucian Academy was established to honour Yu Gye (pen name Sinam, 1607–1664) and to train future scholars. Yu Gye was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period and a scholar well versed in ritual propriety. He was a disciple of Kim Jang-saeng and is counted as one of the Five Sages among the Confucian scholars of Chungcheong Province. Chilsanseowon was founded in 1687, the 13th year of King Sukjong, and in 1697, the 23rd year of King Sukjong, it received from the king a plaque reading 'Chilsan', becoming a sa'aek seowon, an academy granted a royal charter plaque. It was later closed under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing Confucian academies, and was restored in 1967. Within the academy grounds are a shrine for memorial rites and, for study, a lecture hall and a jangpangak, a repository for printing woodblocks. The shrine enshrines Yu Gye's spirit tablet and portrait, and memorial rites are held every year in the third and ninth lunar months. The jangpangak houses the printing blocks of his work Garye wollyu and the original woodblocks of his collected writings, the Sinamjip.
