Songhoseowon was built to honour Mun Geuk-gyeom (1122–1189), posthumously titled Chungsuk-gong. Mun Geuk-gyeom was a civil official during the period when military officials held power in Goryeo; even after becoming a chief state councillor he concurrently served as a senior military commander and gave advice to the military officials, making him a distinctive figure who combined civil and military accomplishments. Songhoseowon was built in 1777, the first year of King Jeongjo, in Yeokpyeong-ri, Daebyeong-myeon. It was later demolished in 1871, the seventh year of Emperor Gojong, under Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies, and the shrine building and other structures were restored in 1957. The building standing today was relocated and restored in 1985 owing to the construction of Hapcheon Dam.
