Five-story Stone Pagoda in Susan-ri, Jangseong
장성 수산리 오층석탑 · 長城 壽山里 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands in the courtyard of a private house beside a national road about 1 km north of Jangseong-eup. As no records survive, it is not known which temple the pagoda originally belonged to. The foundation is buried underground, so its structure cannot be determined, and above it rise five storeys of the pagoda body. Each body stone is carved at its corners with pillar-shaped mouldings. The roof stones have a steeply sloping upper surface, with eaves that run horizontal before curving sharply upward at the four corners; their undersides carry four tiers of support blocks on the first to third storeys and three tiers on the fourth and fifth. At the top, a knob-shaped base and a finial in the shape of a lotus bud survive as the crowning ornament. Compared with the first-storey body stone, the second-storey body stone shrinks sharply, both in size and in height. It is regrettable that, with the foundation buried, the pagoda's full form cannot be seen, but it is outstanding for the balance of its proportions and the skill with which its stones were dressed. It is presumed to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
