Dongnam-ri Stone Pagoda
동남리석탑 · 東南里石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in the front yard of the Buyeo National Museum. It was moved here from the site of an old Goryeo-period temple at Nonjeol village in Seongmok-ri. The pagoda has a two-tiered foundation (gidan) supporting the overall weight, topped by a five-storey body (tapsin). Only part of the lower foundation survives, and the body stone of the fourth storey is missing. The uppermost stone of the upper foundation carries a wide border around the area supporting the first-storey body stone, decorated with a carved lotus design. Each body stone of the pagoda has pillar shapes carved at its corners, and from the second storey the height suddenly decreases, creating a marked contrast with the first storey. The thick, heavy-looking roof stones have three-tiered supports carved into their undersides; their upper surfaces are almost level, with the four corners lifting only faintly. At the top, only the base stone that once supported the finial ornament remains. Although the stonework is simple and somewhat unskilfully finished, the pagoda preserves well the stone pagoda style of the late Goryeo period, making it valuable material for stylistic research.
