This building was constructed by the Cheongju Gwak clan to educate later generations. Built in the 1500s, it was originally called Samnakjae, but is said to have later been renamed Hwasudang by Heo Yu, whose pen name was Ikseong. In 1854 it was rebuilt at Yujeon-ri, about 1 km east of its present site, and in October 1986 it was relocated and restored to its current location owing to the construction of the Hapcheon Dam. The building measures four bays across the front and two bays along the side, and is roofed with a hipped-and-gabled roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side.
