Sinjam Stele
신잠비 · 申潛碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to honour the benevolent governance and achievements of Sinjam, who wrote under the pen name Yeongcheonja and served as magistrate of Taein. Sinjam (1491-1554) passed the hyeollyangwa, a special recommendation-based civil service examination, in 1519, the fourteenth year of King Jungjong, but was forced from office by the Gimyo Purge, a political purge of reform-minded officials, and spent some twenty years in seclusion, devoting himself entirely to writing and painting. He was later reinstated and served as magistrate of Taein and of Ganseong, and died while serving as magistrate of Sangju. He was said to be especially gifted in literary composition and in calligraphy and painting. The stele's body stone stands on a tall pedestal, with the upper corners of the body stone rounded off. The inscription has been badly worn by wind and rain and is now difficult to read, but it appears to record Sinjam's achievements. It was erected in 1545, the thirty-ninth year of King Jungjong, by local residents who, unwilling to forget his contributions, wished to pass his memory on to later generations.
