Discovered in 1933 at the site of Cheonwangsa Temple on Geumseongsan Mountain in Buyeo-eup, Buyeo-gun, South Chungcheong Province, this Buddha statue is now housed in the Buyeo National Museum. The head is large in proportion to the body, and the figure stands upright with the shoulders and lower body in an almost straight line. The face is full and fleshy, with the eyes half closed. The neck bears three lines of folds known as samdo (三道), and the robe draped over both shoulders, unadorned with any pattern, falls all the way to the feet. The right hand is raised with the palm facing outward, while the left hand hangs down with the palm showing. Because the head is rendered disproportionately large relative to the body, throwing off the overall balance, the carving technique suggests that this is a regionally styled Buddha statue of the Goryeo period, of a type that was popular throughout the Chungcheong region.
