Changgangseowon Confucian Academy
창강서원 · 滄江書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis seowon, a Confucian academy, was built to honour Chupo Hwang Sin (1560–1617). Hwang Sin was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period who studied under Seong Hon and Yi I. He placed first in the alseong mun-gwa, a special state examination held when the king visited the Confucian shrine, and held a number of official posts; during the Japanese invasions of Korea he rose to the rank of Jeolchung-janggun, and after his death he was posthumously granted the title of Right State Councillor. Built in the seventh year of King Injo (1629), the academy received a name plaque reading 'Changgang' from the king in the eighth year of King Sukjong (1682), becoming a sa-aek seowon, an academy granted royal chartered status. It was later closed under Heungseon Daewongun's decree ordering the abolition of seowon, and in 1966 it was relocated and restored to its present site. The surviving buildings are a shrine for ancestral rites, a lecture hall for study, and the Dongjae and Seojae dormitories for students. The shrine measures three bays across the front and two bays to the side, with a gable roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). The bracket sets supporting the eaves are in the dapo style, with brackets placed both atop the columns and between them. Memorial rites are held every year on the fifteenth day of the third and ninth lunar months.
