Standing Anseong Jungni Stone Buddha
안성죽리석조여래입상 · 安城竹里石造如來立像

This stone Buddha statue stands beside a village guardian tree at the entrance to Oepyeong village, Jukri-ri, Daedeok-myeon, Anseong. It currently stands 2.35 m tall, with the area below the knees buried in the ground. The statue was carved from a single stone together with its halo, a representation of the sacred light radiating from the Buddha's body. The square face bears a tall ushnisha, the topknot-shaped protrusion on the crown of the Buddha's head symbolising wisdom, and a jewel-shaped finial set atop it, a precious orb depicted on the ushnisha. The eyes are large and round, while the nose and mouth are very small by comparison. Three lines symbolising wisdom are carved on the short neck, and because the neck is so short, the ears touch the shoulders. The robe covering both shoulders drapes over the arms down to near the wrists, and a semicircular band is draped over the right shoulder. In front of the abdomen the two hands are placed one over the other as in the meditation mudra, the hand gesture of the Buddha in meditation, supporting a lotus bud. This statue follows a different lineage from the localised stone Buddhas carved during the Goryeo period in areas such as Yongin and Anseong, and is notable for its rounded, broad shoulders and highly accomplished detail. The jewelled finial atop the ushnisha, the manner in which the outer robe is worn, the treatment of the drapery folds at both shoulders, and the treatment of the skirt visible at the chest resemble the seated stone Buddha at Sangunsa Temple in Goyang, made in the late 15th century. This work, too, is presumed to have been made in the early Joseon period, around the same time as the Sangunsa Temple seated Buddha.
