Eo Square was built to honour the spirits of twenty-five descendants of General Kim Yu-sin who died heroic deaths in battles in the Honam region over the seven years from the Imjin War to the Jeongyu War, and of five of their wives, who took their own lives on hearing the sad news. The court, moved by their devotion, granted them the rank of Seonmu wonjong gongsin, a title for meritorious subjects, in 1605, the 38th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and bestowed on them a book called the Danseocheolgwon, stamped with the royal seal. Further, in 1749, the 25th year of King Yeongjo, the king ordered that a pavilion (gak) be built to house and preserve the Danseocheolgwon, and the book has been preserved there to this day. The building measures three kan across the front and two kan deep (a kan being the traditional unit of space between two pillars), and its gabled roof takes the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side.
