A gaeksa, or guest house, was a place where travelling officials and foreign envoys lodged, or where ceremonial respects were paid to the king. Wandogaeksa was built in 1722, the second year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon, by Yi Hyeong, who held the post of cheomsa, a military commander, at Garipojin garrison, and was rebuilt in 1869, the sixth year of Emperor Gojong. It measures five kan across the front and two kan deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof shaped like the character 八 (eight) when viewed from the side. It is the oldest building on Wando Island, and the plaque reading "Honam Jeilban", meaning the foremost hall in Honam, was written in 1854, the fifth year of King Cheoljong of Joseon, by Hongseon.
