Dolmens are representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol, and are generally thought to have been the tombs of a ruling class with wealth or political power. Dolmens in Korea are divided into the table type, in which four support stones form a stone chamber topped by a huge flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built below ground with small support stones set beneath the capstone. In Godae-ri, Yanggu-eup, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon State, dolmens stand clustered in two locations; at one of these, known as 'Saetmal', there are six dolmens in all. Of these, Nos. 1 and 2 are of the table type and the remaining four are of the go-board type, ranging in size from about 2.5 m at the largest to about 1.4 m at the smallest. According to a 1987 excavation by a team from Kyung Hee University, Dolmen No. 1, although of the table type, was found to have a burial chamber beneath the support stones under its capstone, a form different from the usual table-type dolmen. This unusual structure, with its burial facility set into the ground, represents a new variant of the table-type dolmen and provides important material for future research on the type. The dolmen has since been relocated and restored on the outdoor grounds of the Yanggu Prehistoric Museum.
