This is the tomb of Hwang Il-ho (1588–1641), pen name Jiso, a civil official and loyal subject of the mid-Joseon period. He studied under Jo Su-ryun, and after passing the state examination in 1635, the thirteenth year of King Injo, he held a succession of official posts. When the Manchu invasion broke out in 1636, the fourteenth year of King Injo, he was credited with safely escorting the king to Namhansanseong Fortress and was promoted to magistrate of Jinju. In 1638, the sixteenth year of King Injo, while serving as governor of Uiju, he plotted to reject Qing China and aid the Ming dynasty, and was killed by Qing soldiers. At the foot of the tomb stands a spirit-path stele (sindobi) — a memorial stone erected beside a road near a tomb to honour the lifetime achievements of a king or high official — which was set up in 1797, the twenty-first year of King Jeongjo. Its text was composed by Song Si-yeol and its calligraphy written by Hwang Un-jo.
