Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA hyanggyo is a local Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally cultivate the local populace. Map Local Confucian School was built following the one-county-one-hyanggyo principle when Jido County was newly established in 1896, the first year of the Geonyang era, as part of the administrative reorganisation of the late Joseon period. The Myeongnyundang lecture hall was rebuilt in 1947–1948, the Daeseongjeon shrine was repaired in 1966, and the Myeongnyundang was repaired again in 1968, giving the school its present form. It follows the "hall in front, shrine behind" (jeonhakhumyo) layout, using the gentle slope of Bongjeongsan Mountain in two tiers, with the educational space placed in front and the ritual space behind. The Daeseongjeon, five bays across the front and three bays deep, enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. The Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students once gathered to study, is four bays across the front and two and a half bays deep, and has a hip-and-gable roof forming, when seen from the side, the shape of the Chinese character for eight (八). Other buildings include the Yangsajae dormitory, the inner three-gated gate, and the outer gate. During the Joseon period the state provided land, slaves and books to support the students' education, but today the educational function has ceased and only the ritual function remains.
