Jinwonseong Fortress, Jangseong
장성 진원성 · 長城 珍原城
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis mountain fortress stands on a small peak about 40 m above sea level in Jinwon-myeon, Jangseong-gun, built by linking two low, flat, basin-shaped peaks; it is said to have served as the walled county seat (hyeonseong) of Jinwon-hyeon. The inner face of the wall was built on a slope, which is thought to have been done for convenient drainage. The Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam records its length as 400 cheok and its height as 2 cheok (cheok being a traditional unit of length, roughly 30 cm), whereas the wall surviving today is about 800 m long. Along the stele-lined street below the fortress stand six steles honouring the good governance of Jinwon magistrates, including Choe Hui-seol. A poem by Kim Geuk-gi, a literary official active during the reign of King Myeongjong of Goryeo (r. 1170–1197), refers to Jinwonseong Fortress, suggesting that it was built as the county seat before the twelfth century and governed the district until it fell into ruin during the Jeongyu War, the second Japanese invasion of 1597.
