Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPark Se-dang (pen name Seogye, 1629–1703) was a civil official of the late Joseon period whose family seat was Bannam. Despite repeated invitations to take office, he devoted himself to farming at Seokcheon-dong while pursuing scholarship and training students. Park Se-dang's grave is a single mound jointly interred with his two wives, of the Nam clan of Uiryeong and the Jeong clan of Gwangju. The mound is square and encircled by retaining stones (hoseok); such large square retaining stones are an example of the high level of skill employed in the stonework of scholar-official graves in the late Joseon period. A stone statue and an incense-table stone stand in front of the mound; the statue's base uses square-cut stone rather than the usual drum-shaped stone (gosok), a feature found consistently among the stone statues of this burial ground. The ornamental stone pillars (mangjuseok) erected to the front left and right of the mound date from the 18th century and are so finely polished that they look as if made in modern times. The gravestone beside the mound was erected in 1731 and takes the form of a cap stone over a square pedestal (gaeseokbangbu). Notably, the cap stone is not shaped like the roof of a house but is a gyu-shaped cap stone (gyuhyeong gaeseok), a simple form with a flat top and both corners cut away. This same type of cap stone was also used on the spirit-road stele of Park Se-dang's father, Park Jeong, in Gimpo. On the back of the gravestone, a text that Park Se-dang had composed in advance, together with a text by his disciple Yi Deok-su, was inscribed by his grandson Park Pil-gi, who also wrote the characters on the front. The gravestone's body was half-destroyed during the Korean War and was re-carved and re-erected in 1968.
