A hyanggyo is a local Confucian school, an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local populace. Geumguhyanggyo was first built in 1390, the second year of King Gongyang of Goryeo, at a site said to have been about 2 km east of the Geumgu county office. It was later moved to its present site in 1675, the first year of King Sukjong of Joseon, where it has remained to this day. Daeseongjeon Hall has a front of three bays and a side of two bays, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, takes the shape of the character 人 (person). Inside are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and of sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon dynasty the school received land, slaves and books from the state to educate its students, but today its educational role has ceased, leaving only its function of holding memorial rites.
