A hyanggyo (local Confucian school) was an educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and edify the local populace. Mangyeonghyanggyo was first built in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong, at Songjeon-ri, west of the Mangyeong government office. It burned down during the reign of King Gwanghaegun (r. 1608–1623) and was rebuilt in 1637, the fifteenth year of King Injo, at its present site in Dongmunnae-ri, where it has remained to this day. Daeseongjeon Hall measures three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and is roofed with a gabled roof (matbae) that forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when seen from the side. Inside the hall are enshrined the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon period, the school received land, servants and books from the state to teach students, but today its educational function has ceased and only its memorial rites continue.
