KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This group of stupas, standing on the eastern foot of Seoraksan Mountain's Sogongwon Park, is a typical stupa group in which the funerary stupas of successive eminent monks were gathered at a single site after Sinheungsa Temple was rebuilt in 1644, the 22nd year of King Injo's reign; it comprises 19 stupas. Three of them, including the Daewondangtap, are stupas shaped like a round memorial hall (wondang), while sixteen, including the Seonggokdangtap, are bell-shaped (seokjong) stupas, of which the identity of the monk commemorated is known for twelve. Alongside the stupas stand six steles, including the Sinheungsa Sajeokbi, which records the origins of Sinheungsa Temple, and the Yongamdang Daeseonsabi, written by Gang Se-hwang; these were erected between 1764 and 1827.
